Build Your Own Mesh Head Electronic Drum Set

BUILD YOUR OWN MESH HEAD ELECTRONIC DRUM SET

This project will utilize several basic hand tools, most of which are common in the average household, and if not, can be borrowed from a friend or bought with little investment at the local hardware store.

Tool List

• Hack Saw or PVC Pipe Cutter

• Screwdrivers

• Coping Saw

• Drill (hand or electric)

• Ruler/Tape Measure

• Sanding Block

• Compass

• Needle

• Embroidery Hoop

• Soldering Iron

• Clamp/Vice

• Scissors

• Glue gun

You will notice that all the tools are hand tools. Even the drill can be a manual drill if desired. Of course power tools can be substituted if available to make construction easier, but they are by no means necessary. All instructions are written for those with the most basic tools.

This book is divided into separate chapters for each component of the drum set. First you will build the drums, cymbals, and module holder, and then you will build the rack. Each chapter includes a list of materials necessary for its respective component. It is recommended that you acquire the materials as you go, instead of buying everything at once. This will save you money in the end should you decide to modify the design.

There are, however, a few general supplies that are needed for throughout the project, and will be listed here.

General Supplies

• Glue (white glue or wood glue, the two are identical in holding strength)

• Epoxy (any general epoxy that can be used on foam, metal, and wood)

• Double stick tape

• Electrical solder

You must buy an electronic drum module to build an electronic drum set. A used Alesis D4 is highly recommended for this project, as it keeps with the theme of inexpensive, yet high quality. The D4 is a time-tested design that has been used by professional musicians for years. It is also easily found used on internet auctions and sales, and can usually be found for $100 - $150. Other modules will work as well, but will be more expensive.
